Product Highlights:
Designated as a 164-1/2 H, this low-angle bevel-up smoother plane is ideal for providing the final finish on surfaces, especially woods of difficult grain patterns.
12° bed angle, coupled with a 38° blade bevel, yields an effective cutting angle of 50°, known as a York pitch. This is an ideal cutting angle for minimizing tear-out.
The adjustable mouth is easily moved with the front locking knob. Can be adjusted to a narrow slit for fine shavings with minimum tear-out or opened wider for heavier cuts.
A unique stop-screw in the throat adjusts to whatever mouth opening is ideal. It lets you open the mouth fully for blade removal, yet quickly restores the exact mouth setting.
Sole is 10" long and 3-1/8" wide.
Body is made of stress-relieved ductile cast iron. Accurately machined, the sole is flat.
Weighs just under 5 lb.
Blade is 2-1/4" wide, 3/16" thick, made of either A2 or O1 tool steel. It is lapped on the non-bevel side to a flatness tolerance of 0.0002" or better over the working surface, and with an average roughness surface finish of 5 microinches (0.000005") or better.
Optional 25° and 50° bevel blades and a 38° toothed blade are available. The 25° bevel blade is best for all end-grain work. The 50° bevel blade is best for working difficult or reversing grain, and the combined cutting angle of 62° produces a Type II chip that eliminates tear-out. The toothed blade is for working difficult grain, especially knots.
Cutting angle stated describes the actual cutting angle where blade meets wood and is determined by a micro-bevel at the cutting edge; the blade's primary angle is typically a few degrees less.
